Bell Work

The idea of "Bell Work" is to get students working right at the beginning of the day when they are eager and their brains are ready for learning. By giving them a short and simple piece of work to get them focused, the students will be on task right when they enter the classroom.
Bell work is simple enough that the students do not need extra instructions, but can work individually or with a partner to solve the task at hand.
This allows the teacher to deal with the transitions of the morning, which always includes paperwork, parents at the classroom door, students needing assistance, etc.
Bell work could be math or language, but is always a review of information they have learned, and skills they have rehearsed.
Since Bell Work is introduced in September, the students are familiar with the routine and therefore know that when they are finished their work, they put their worksheet in their folder and begin either quiet reading or sketching.
