Guided Reading
Activity Objective:
The goal of Guided Reading is to promote reading fluency and comprehension by giving the students ample opportunities to learn and use a variety of effective strategies to improve their understanding of what they read as well as provide extensive appropriate practice with reading aloud.
Small-group instruction provides opportunities for the teacher to offer guidance and feedback to all students. Guided Reading:
The teacher does guided reading with one group every other day. Every group has a guided reading session once every two weeks.
The texts are chosen in relation to other curriculum areas (social studies, science, etc.), and are generally the most complicated or difficult book that the students will read in the 2 week cycle. The focus of the Guided Reading sessions is to focus on a reading strategy with which a small group of students are having difficulty. New vocabulary is introduced and discussed, and the teacher facilitates discussion regarding comprehension and strategies used. Sometimes the students are given the opportunity to read the text by themselves at their desks prior to joining the guided reading group. Either way, the students spend some time reading the text to themselves silently or using a whisper. |

There are many different approaches to guided reading. The Balanced Literacy Diet website has many different examples of educators of various grades implementing guided reading in their literacy program (see video below and visit www.litdiet.org).
