Literature Circle Jobs
During each 2 week rotation, the students read 5 short books.
For 4 of the 5 books they are a part of a literature circle discussion, and have a different literature circle job each time (see below).
The Literature Circle jobs and symbols are taught in September, and remain the same (with a few extensions) for the whole school year.
This allows the students to become familiar with the jobs and with the routine. The fact that the jobs are the same for the whole year also allow both the teacher and students to track their progress throughout the year.
Job cards are posted behind the Conferencing Table next to the Literature Circle Schedule. A copy of each job card is also printed and pasted into each student's individual where they keep and track their jobs and literature circle work.

The Jobs:
Summarizer- Writes about the main characters, the setting and the key points from the text, and uses them to write a short summary of the text.
- During the literature circle they give a brief summary of the text. ![]()

Discussion Director- Develops a list of open-ended questions to ask the group to spark conversation.
- Keeps the conversation going by prompting their peers for more information/ ![]()

Literary Luminary- Selects 2 or 3 passages from the text and discusses why they were chosen. Were they important to the story or character development? Were they funny or unexpected? Were they well written with rich descriptive words?

Connector- Draws connections between Text to Text; T to Self; and T to World.
